5/11

A quick point. There has been much media attention this week on England 2 - 3 Croatia from almost two years ago: one of the lowest points in the recent history of the national side.

Take a look at the team: Carson, Richards, Campbell, Lescott, Bridge, Wright-Phillips (Beckham 46), Gerrard, Barry (Defoe 46), Lampard, Joe Cole (Bent 80), Crouch.

Anything stand out?

5 english City players - Oh my what have we done! Did they all really play that badly? Carson wwas the main problem - along with McClaren! Still I wonder how many times all five of those have payed in the same England team before or will ever again!

Not every City player of the time had a bad night. I remember thinking Richards wasn't even the best Manchester City right back on show... Vedran Corluka had an excellent game.

There's a trivia question in there. How often have City players lined up in opposing international teams playing in the same position?

It happened last month with De Jong v Barry, than at the weekend with Robinho v Tevez (though strictly speaking they're not quite in the same position).

micah i remember being way out of position for one of croatia's goals, maybe the first. many recognise that both right-back and left-back are not settled positions at City, richards and bridge have started well but will need to keep that up. still think zaba is a no-brainer at right-back.

Such recent history and already so difficult to believe that Steve McLaren once...ahem...managed England.
