The Francophone decline at Manchester City

So we've got three players whose first language is French.

But compare that with 2002/03 (our first season back in the Premiership under Kevin Keegan.) We had four Frenchmen in the squad: Sylvain Distin, David Sommeil, Christian Negouai and Nicolas Anelka. From Cameroon (French speaking) we had Lucien Mettomo and Marc-Vivien Foé. Then add the two Algerians Ali Benarbia and Djamel Belmadi (the latter was actually born in Paris), and you have eight French speakers.

It would be interesting to read some first hand accounts of the City squad at the time (we've just got to hold our breath for that Kevin Horlock autobiography), but it would be interesting to read if there was a big issue with a Francophone clique inside the club at this point.
